On the 10th and 11th of August, Anneke de Vree, an extraordinary para-equestrian dressage rider, secured a remarkable victory at the Club Aros in Murcia. This triumph is more than just a win—it signifies her readiness to compete on an international stage, despite the fact that her non-Spanish citizenship means her participation hinges solely on her qualification scores.
Anneke's path to victory was anything but easy. The summer heat forced the competition to be held at night under floodlights, a situation that posed unique challenges. Riding in these conditions required her to keep her horse not only cool but also focused amid the unusual setting. Despite these difficulties, Anneke delivered a faultless performance that earned her the top spot.
Anneke de Vree's journey from Belgium to Altea
Originally from Belgium, Anneke de Vree relocated to Altea in 2019. Her equestrian journey began when she was 11, and by the age of 15, she had fully dedicated herself to dressage. Initially, she competed as an able-bodied rider. However, a severe back injury in 2010 forced her to transition to para-equestrian dressage. This shift, while challenging, did not hinder her passion or dedication to the sport.
Anneke’s resilience is evident in her ability to compete at such a high level despite significant physical challenges. She suffers from substantial muscle deficiency in both shoulders, 50% paralysis in her left hand, and a weakened left side and back. Yet, these obstacles have not deterred her from pursuing her equestrian dreams.
A decorated career across Europe
Anneke's talent and determination have led her to compete across Europe, in countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, France, Portugal, and Spain. Her list of achievements is impressive. She has secured second and third place in the National Parc Equestre Championship and has been crowned the Spanish Champion Para-Equestre three times.
As Anneke de Vree continues to rise in the para-equestrian world, her recent victory in Murcia not only highlights her exceptional skill but also her unwavering spirit. Her journey from Belgium to the top of the Spanish para-equestrian scene is a testament to her dedication and resilience.
